Plan to meet up for the Second Annual scoping for Lesser Scaup and other ducks at O. L. Peacock Sr. Park. During our January 2025 field trip, we observed over 1200 Lesser Scaup, a few Ruddy Ducks and 26 other Florida winter species of birds. Fingers crossed that the ducks will return in 2026. This field trip is timed with the expected peak of migration.
In recent winters, over 1000 Lesser Scaup have spent a few weeks in the Lake at O. L. Peacock Sr. Park. Numbers usually build throughout January, likely due to frigid temperatures to the north. Scaup are only present in Florida in the winter. Numbers start to decrease as temperatures warm. and the ducks head north to breed in Alaska, Canada and northern US.
Doris and Steve Brookens will be at the Park Saturday, January 24th from 9:00am - 11:00am with spotting scopes to enhance viewing of the ducks. Join them for the entire time, or come and go as your schedule permits.
Bring your binoculars and possibly a lawn chair if you would like to sit and stay awhile.
