Our field trip on, Saturday, February 7, 2026 was enjoyed by sixteen people. Jewel Hart and Kathy Mayshar, co-lead this trip. Winding Waters is in Palm Beach County. The day was gorgeous, temps in the 50’s to start and ended in the 70’s. There was a slight breeze so the group was quite comfortable. The group was mixed with some experienced birders and some new comers. Some birders we haven’t seen in awhile so everyone was joyful. We saw 52 species of birds. It was about a 1.5 mile walk on a grassy trail around the small lake.
To our delight, we saw an American bittern. The bittern flushed out when a group of us laughed. We saw an abundant amount of glossy ibis, cattle egret, and boat tailed grackles. A roseate spoonbill flew by us. The habitat was great for water birds, song birds, raptors, and woodpeckers. There were some huge gators there. Two purple gallinules came and gave us good close looks. The warblers we saw were: pine, palm, yellow throat, and yellow rumps. We enjoyed seeing a blue headed vireo. A sharp shinned hawk flew over just as we were leaving.
We met at Hawk Pavilion at Dyer Park, just around the corner from Winding Waters. Then the group brought a picnic lunch there and we ate on the picnic. It was just a fun morning.
