McCarty Ranch Trip Report
On Saturday, January 24th, 13 birders gathered at McCarty Ranch Preserve on a beautiful sunny morning. The group caravaned along the entrance road stopping at different habitats where birds were active. The stars of the morning were the Yellow-rumped Warblers. Dozens of them flitted from tree to shrub and back on both sides of the road. One shrub seemed almost magical as a continuous stream of warblers dined on its berries, affording excellent views. Two Pine Warblers joined the yellow-rumps and stood out with their bright yellow plumage. Other special sightings included a singing Eastern Meadowlark, a Crested Caracara in flight, and mewing Gray Catbirds. The group observed a total of 41 species. The eBird checklist is available here.
